How Child Abuse Impacts Children

By the age of 18, one in 10 children will suffer physical or sexual abuse. Nationwide, neglect is the most common form of abuse.

Of the child abuse cases in 2019 in the U.S.:

  • Nearly 75% were neglect only.
  • More than 17% were physical abuse only.
  • Over 9% were sexual abuse only.
  • Most (77.5%) were at the hands of parents.

Yet the statistics show a more complex problem where children experience more than one form of abuse. In 2018, more than 15% of kids suffered two or more forms of abuse.

Of confirmed cases for Lawrence County in 2020:

  • 7% were neglect.
  • 48% were physical abuse.
  • 26% were sexual abuse.

CAC of Lawrence County History

For more than 30 years, the CAC has been a leader in preventing and addressing child abuse.

Started in 1989, the CAC emerged out of the efforts of Partners in Prevention. This concerned local group came together in 1986 to seek models of child abuse intervention and agreed on the CAC model.

The CAC model:

  • Provides a centralized, child-focused, non-threatening center where agencies can work together on child abuse cases.
  • Reduces trauma to the child because the same team of experts cares for them throughout the case.

In 1996, the CAC affiliated with Jameson Memorial Hospital. This relationship continued when the hospital affiliated with UPMC in 2016.

During this time, the CAC added several prevention programs including:

  • Nurse-Family Partnership.
  • Parents as Teachers.
  • Early Head Start.

The CAC is:

  • Fully accredited by the National Children's Alliance.
  • Endorsed by the Parents as Teachers National Center as a Blue Ribbon Affiliate.
