Surgery at UPMC Jameson

Precision and technical expertise by a top-level surgeon. Post-surgical care provided by clinically strong, compassionate staff. Access to the latest, minimally-invasive technology. When we need surgery, this is what we expect, and deserve. And this is what you receive at Jameson Hospital.

Same Day Surgery Unit

As surgical procedures advance with minimally-invasive technology, there are a growing number of outpatient surgical procedures replacing surgeries that may have at one time required an inpatient stay. Patients having an outpatient surgical procedure at UPMC Jameson will stay in the Same Day Surgery Unit for pre-operative and post-operative care. You will begin and end your outpatient surgical experience at Jameson Hospital in our Same Day Surgery Unit.

Your Care Team is comprised of highly skilled, specialty-trained surgical/critical care registered nurses and assistants who work closely with your surgeon and anesthesia team.

The Same Day Surgery Unit provides care for:

  • All outpatient surgical patients with procedures performed in the Operating Room (OR)
  • Pre/Post-operative care for invasive medical imaging procedures
  • Pre/Post-operative care for cardiac catheterization laboratory patients (angioplasties and diagnostic catheterizations)
  • Patients receiving blood transfusions and intravenous infusions

You are welcomed to contact the Patient Care Manager of our Same Day Surgery Unit with any questions.

Post-anesthesia Care Unit (Recovery Room)

Immediately following surgery in the Operating Room, our patients recover in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), formerly known as the Recovery Room. One of three divisions of the Surgical Services Department, PACU is connected to the Surgical Suite (ORs) and the Same Day Surgery Unit. Outpatient surgeries return to Same Day Surgery following PACU care and inpatients or patients requiring an inpatient stay will arrive in their inpatient room on the 2nd or 3rd floor following their care in PACU.

There are thirteen areas in the department, all visible from anywhere in the room to best care for our patients. Each area is equipped with two wall suctions, two oxygen outlets and a Hewlett Packard monitoring system and emergency call button. The monitoring system continuously monitors blood pressures, EKG and SA02 for adults, children and neonates. There are two Passport monitors with pressure lines and a central monitoring console that allows PACU staff to view hemodynamic parameters of patients in the Operating Room undergoing anesthesia.

All PACU staff are ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) Certified with critical care nursing experience.

You are welcomed to contact the Patient Care Manager of the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit with any questions.
